The McKechnie house at 151 Church St. is the only cobblestone home in the Village of Palmyra. It was built in the 1830s by Alexander McKechnie, a native of Scotland. There was once a brewery and malt house on the property. Robert McKecknie, 38, also born in Scotland; his wife and three children resided here in 1855. It has a two-story gable front with stones laid five courses to the quoin and those on the side, three courses to the quoin. The house is very plain. The windows are narrow and deep set, giving evidence of early construction. The left and the rear are of fieldstone construction while the front and right are built entirely of lake washed sandstones. There was a malt house in the rear. Richard Palmer blog.
